Hindsight: Broken glasses

I have ventured to different charity shops looking for older, vintage looking things can manipulate and use in my work.

I got 2 pairs of glasses, rounded and squared that I was able to smash and then glue some pieces back together. The reason I wanted to do this was because the broken glasses feel personal as they used to belong to someone. The suggest a life that was lived, something so important to someone that wore them, saw the world through them and then left them behind. I wanted to create that connection to memory and absence.

They also represent fractured memory, distorted perspective and damaged communication. Glasses are used to help someone see clearly, however, once they have been smashed the ability to see things as they once were become tarnished.

This links to the idea of unsent letters and unspoken words as often regret comes from things we failed to say or moments we misunderstood.
